So here is my lil Tutorial on how to make your Custom Leopard Folder

The pictures are in the wrong direction, cause I wanted to have the full result at the top, so if you´re interested start at the bottom

PSD File included!!

1. Create the Base-Folder

In Leopard navigate to: System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle

Click „Show Content“ → Contents/Resources

Here are all the stock Folders of OS X stored

Navigate to „GenericFolderIcon.icns“

A double click will open the Icon in preview;

Here you can „save as“ the Big icon as „.png“

Open the Icon in Photoshop (or open my PSD File)

2. Add Inner Effect

Now add your Logo on a new Layer, duplicate it (Name 1 COLOR and 1 EFFECTS INSIDE)

COLOR Layer: I set the opacity to 15% to match the other icons in Leopard

Now drag the Effects from the EFFECTS INSIDE (of my File) Layer to your copy of the COLOR layer (Reduce the fill to 0%)

This is done by holding down your mouse button on the „effects“ below the Layer and drag it on your own Layer

3. Add outer Effects

Pick the „magic wand“ and select the outside of your logo (on COLOR layer)

Create a new layer and fill the previously taken selection with black, set the fill to 0% and call it EFFECTS OUTSIDE

Now drag the Effects from the EFFECTS OUTSIDE (of my File) Layer to your copy of the COLOR layer (Reduce the fill to 0%)

4. Exporting and creating a ICNS file

Now export your ready icon with „save for web and devices“ , select png-24“

This is important, because „save as .png will change the color and the saturation of the Icon, if you don´t trust me, test it out ☺

Sometimes there are some nasty lines on the outside of the picture,

Reopen the saved PNG and erase them, if you do this, you again have to save it for web

Now download this little app called „img2icns“ drag the PNG-File on it and

YOURE DONE!!!

Hope ya like my lil tut

Have fun making your own Folders

If something in my TUT is unclear or I made something wrong, you know a better way, please...let me know!

Thanks a lot for this tutorial! I've been looking for quite long time something like this, although the folder is predone so it is and isn't what I've been looking for.

Anyways, thanks. :)
what do you mean with, the folder is predone? and it isn´t what you´ve been looking for, can I help you?
I meant that I'd want to find a tutorial that helps me to create folders that OS X uses instead of copying those from itself (even though 512 x 512 is enough and works quite nicely when shrank). ;)
is it normal that i can't click on the folder icon annymore (only on the text part)?
could you please specify what you mean,

inside photoshop, or when the icon is done etc...
Sorry, problem allready solved.

I made an icon...paste the PNG file instead of an ICNS file, and then you can't click the icon anymore (in finder)
